Stainless steel is an alloy of iron that contains chromium. This element naturally forms an invisible layer known as the passive layer, which protects the metal from corrosion and prevents it from rusting as ordinary steel does.


One of the most important characteristics of this protective layer is that it naturally regenerates when the steel is clean and exposed to oxygen in the environment. However, this protection can be affected by certain chemicals or improper cleaning practices.

  • Use of products containing chlorine or hypochlorite.

  • Water with a high concentration of salts or minerals (hard water).

  • Prolonged exposure to moisture.

  • Residues from acidic foods.

  • Contamination from carbon-steel particles originating from metal scouring pads or tools.

What Should You Do If Rust Spots Appear?

If superficial corrosion spots appear, in some cases it is advisable to perform specialized cleaning or a passivation process, which restores the stainless steel's natural protective layer and helps recover its corrosion resistance.

Sometimes you may hear that stainless steel needs to be "seasoned." Technically, the correct process is called passivation. It involves cleaning the surface so that the steel can restore its natural protective layer, which is responsible for its corrosion resistance. Unlike cast-iron or carbon-steel cookware, stainless steel molds and containers do not need to be seasoned with oil.


  1. Clean the affected area with a stainless steel cleaner or a citric acid solution.

  2. Rinse thoroughly with plenty of water.

  3. After cleaning, allow the utensil to dry completely. When stainless steel is clean and exposed to oxygen in the air, it naturally regenerates its protective layer, helping maintain its corrosion resistance.


With proper maintenance, these utensils can provide many years of service while maintaining their appearance, hygiene, and functionality.
